Recently we took a small journey to La Crosse WI to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The shrine is located in one of the most beautiful area in the state.
The Shrine is not a parish, they call it a place of pilgrimage for Catholics and other believers from throughout the United States and beyond.
The site is located on a absolutely beautiful. The walk up the hill from the welcoming center to the chapel is breathtaking.
As we left the Pilgrim Center and begin to ascend the trail to the site of the Shrine Church, paused at the Mother of Good Counsel Votive Candle Chapel.
Inside the Chapel the largest candle rack in the United States, it contains 576 votive candles and measures 14 feet high and12 feet wide on each of its four sides.
Located along the paved meditation trail are devotional areas to Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha (the first Native American Blessed) as well as a beautiful 9 ft relief of St. Joseph the Workman and the Holy Family.
Once you reach the top of the hill you come upon the shrine church. We attended the 10:00 Latin Mass. It was a wonderful day and a meaningful visit, I would encourage all of you to visit.
Be sure to stop and say a prayer at the Memorial to the Unborn. Dedicated on December 12, 2008 (The Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe), remembers the many babies who have died in their mother’s womb. Within the beautiful arcade, there are bronze plaques which explain the teaching of the Catholic Church on the topics of contraception, abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and the dignity of all life. Several planters and a walking path outside the arcade comprise Mary’s Garden – a garden of flowers traditionally named in honor of Our Blessed Mother.
