Lent 2021

“When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to others to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you. – Matthew 6:16-18

What Is Lent

Lent is a 40-day season that precedes Easter. The 40-day timeframe is based on the period Jesus spent in the desert fasting while being tempted by Satan, according to the Gospel accounts in Matthew and Luke.

Ash Wednesday

The first day of Lent is known as Ash Wednesday. Ashes are spread onto the forehead in the sign of a cross. The church make the ashes for Ash Wednesday by burning the palm leaves used on the previous year’s Palm Sunday.
